Your wedding anniversary only happens once a year, which means it’s the perfect time to be a little extra. Whether that translates to chilling out at a luxe spa with your significant other or binge-watching rom-coms at home in your PJs, a few simple touches can make it extra-special and ultra-memorable. Here are some easy ways to ramp up your anniversary this year.
- Get new rings. You don’t have to spend hundreds or even visit the jeweler to get new rings. Consider something simple, like exchanging a pair of silicone wedding rings to mark the occasion. These thoughtful rings sit right in the budgetary sweet spot!
- Try a fancy steak. We’re talkin’ a dry-aged ribeye, a sumptuous filet or, if you’re feeling like really balling out, an authentic cut of Japanese Wagyu featuring abundant marbling.
- Open a special bottle of wine. You’re going to want a tasty bottle of vino to go with that $200 steak! This is one of the few times in your life you get to spend a little cash on a good bottle of bubbly, so make it count with something nice. See: Moet or Dom Perignon.
- Have your cake remade. Just because you’re past the top layer of cake in the freezer phase doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your wedding cake on your anniversary! To go back to the special day, ask your bakery to reproduce a mini version of the original.
- Order a special dessert. Not big on cake? Order something decadent and romantic from the bakery, like chocolate-covered strawberries or cherries.
- Have a romantic movie night. Sometimes the simplest and cheapest things are the ones that mean the most. Pile on the comfy pillows, blankets, movie theater popcorn and candy and binge-watch some of your favorite rom-coms.
- Book a weekend getaway. If it has been awhile since the two of you spent a night away from home, use your anniversary as an excuse to get out of Dodge. It doesn’t have to be anywhere fancy — a weekend jaunt to the coast, mountains or countryside will do.
- Go back to your venue. If you got married in a public or outdoor space, head back to the locale to enjoy a picnic and pop that fancy bottle of bubbles. You could also do this at private venues. Just make sure to ask for permission first!
- Give a traditional anniversary gift. First = paper. Second = cotton. Third = leather. And so on. Reference the list of classic anniversary gifts by year to get some ideas on what to give your significant other in keeping with tradition.
- Take the day off work. What makes an average day extra-special? How about taking the day or afternoon off work and spending time together? You can ditch all your obligations and stay home or book a full day on the town with plenty of fun activities.
- Recreate your first date. Every couple should do this every few years! Take a saunter down memory lane with a full recreation of your first date. Have dinner at the same restaurant or drinks at the same bar and, if you can remember, order what you ordered then!
- Dance to your first dance song. Nothing puts you right back into your wedding day state of mind than a living room first dance. Blast your song and recreate the moment. Afterwards, throw on some of the music you know was played at the reception, as this will help elicit specific memories from the evening you may have forgotten.
- Hire a personal chef. A night out at a fancy restaurant is great and all, but sometimes it’s way more fun to stay in. Hire a local chef to create a romantic dinner at home.
- Make each other a playlist. This one will take you back to high school for sure! Create a playlist on your streaming service of choice (if you don’t already pay for the premium version, get it and make that your gift to each other) and build a special playlist for your spouse. Add songs from your wedding or any tunes that remind you of each other.
- Have a party. We don’t know about you, but we’re pretty much always looking for any good reason to throw a big bash. Just reserve this one for the big years — 10, 20, etc. — so it feels special and so that you can go all out with dinner, drinks and entertainment.
- Sit at the chef’s table. Another fun way to put a big twist on basic dinner is to find a restaurant where you and your significant other can sit at the chef’s table or in a private room. The chef’s table is often located in the kitchen, providing a totally unique and intimate experience away from the main dining room. If offered, sitting at the chef’s table is a must-do at your favorite restaurant, at least once!
- Get a couple’s massage. A classic anniversary activity, the couple’s massage was made for chilling out. This is an especially good idea if you and your spouse have been under a lot of stress and you’re looking for a plan that won’t complicate your life and will actually help relieve some of the stress.
- Look at your wedding pics. Be sure to look at your wedding photos on your anniversary to remind yourself what a happy, special day it was. If you have a video or slideshow, throw it on while you make dinner or enjoy a bottle of wine together.
Any one of these fantastic ideas will help you celebrate your anniversary and show your significant other how much you care. Oh, and one last thing: Don’t forget the card!
